Mangawhai, Northland - Rodney Area Transport Society confirms that one of its buses experienced a fire on Monday, 9 February 2026 in the Mangawhai area. The incident occurred on Mangawhai Road near the intersection with Carter Road, at approximately 3:55 pm.

The bus was transporting 19 students and the driver when the fire ignited. Thanks to the swift actions of the driver and emergency responders, everyone on board was evacuated safely, and no injuries have been reported.

The cause of this event remains under investigation.

“We are extremely grateful that all passengers and the driver are safe,” said Laurence Caltaux of Rodney College. “Our first priority is the wellbeing of our students, and we will continue to support them and their families at this time. We will also work closely with our bus service provider to understand exactly what happened and take any necessary action to prevent a recurrence.”
